Survey Techniques for Protected Species

Our 'Survey Techniques for Protected Species' course is aimed at anyone who feels they lack the necessary field skills to succeed in an ecological job. The course gives an introduction into a range of survey techniques, relevant to both conservation and consultancy.

During the course the following survey techniques will be covered:

  • Dormouse survey techniques including a nest-tube survey.
  • Walkover otter survey covering rivers and canals.
  • Badger survey- visit a badger sett, look for signs and discuss other survey techniques.
  • Reptile surveying.
  • Identification of mammal tracks and signs.
  • Basic bat ecology and bat walk, using detectors.
  • Presentations about water voles and great crested newts

Please note the course will be mainly field based. Site visits will involve sustained walking for up to 5km, some of which will be over rough ground. Please ensure that you are capable of this before booking.

Other details:

Where: The course will be based at our training centre at The Granary, Westpoint, Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, EX5 1DJ. In case you need to stay overnight, we have provided a list of local accommodation.

When: Monday 10th - Tuesday 11th September 2012

We will arrange additional dates according to demand. If you are unable to attend this date and would like to be informed about upcoming dates, please e-mail us at info@acornecology.co.uk.

Times: On the first day the course will start at 10:30 am and will finish at 5:00pm. In the evening we will meet for a meal and an evening bat walk which will be dependant on sunset times (both the meal and bat walk are optional). On the second day the course will commence at 9:00am and finish at around 4:00pm.

Price: The price of the course varies according to your situation: £200 (standard fee); £160 for unemployed/full time students/full time volunteers; and £260 if your organisation is paying. This fee covers tuition only. Prices are inclusive of VAT.
